History & Foundation of the Association

The Sudanese Association of Nutritionists and Dietitians (SAND) is a non-profit professional association that seeks to promote the profession of nutrition and dietitianship in Sudan through training, research, awareness, and participation in national health policy-making.

Providing outstanding nutrition and educational services and promoting research and professional training to support community health and improve nutritional practices.

The first steps towards establishment began as one of the most prominent recommendations resulting from the First National Conference on Infant and Young Child Feeding in Sudan, which was held at the Friendship Hall in Khartoum from August 2-4, 2018.
The conference was held under the full auspices of the Federal Ministry of Health (General Directorate of Primary Health Care - National Nutrition Program) and with direct support from the World Health Organization (WHO), (UNICEF), and other international organizations, with broad participation from specialized medical associations such as the Obstetrics and Gynecology Association and the Pediatric Association.
Context of Establishment:
In the complete absence of any official body representing Sudanese nutrition specialists at that time, the second and final day of the conference witnessed extensive discussions within the hall regarding the complex nutritional problems in Sudan, particularly among children and women.
During the deliberations, Dr. Mayada Faisal Adam Ibrahim, Assistant Professor of Clinical Nutrition at Ahfad University for Women, presented a fundamental vision: she emphasized that Sudan abounds with experts and qualified personnel at various academic levels, and its universities graduate hundreds of specialists annually. Therefore, it is essential to establish an official body that brings these specialists together to contribute to solving nutritional problems in Sudan and the region.
The idea was met with immediate welcome and significant support from representatives of international organizations and the Federal Ministry of Health (Nutrition Department). Consultations were held within the hall to form the association's preparatory committee, and the founding principles were as follows:
Committee Leadership: Dr. Mayada Faisal assumed the chairmanship of the preparatory committee with strong support from the specialists present, most notably Dr. Ikhlas Makawi Assistant Professor of Clinical Nutrition at the University of Khartoum
International Advisory Support: The prominent international expertise of the late Professor Sadiqa Oshi (may God have mercy on her) was sought. She blessed the idea, saying that the lack of a nutrition body in Sudan had always troubled her, but her frequent travels had prevented her from realizing it. She personally supervised, along with the committee, the writing and review of the draft constitution for the association.
Given that most of the founders came from government backgrounds and institutions, the need for a suitable, independent main office became apparent, and Ahfad University for Women was unanimously chosen as the association's headquarters.
Sponsored by Professor Qasim Badri's : The university president (Baba Qasim) welcomed the idea and announced his full support by opening the university's halls and offices for all the association's activities.
Hosting Offices and Meetings: The university's Nutrition and Health Training and Research Center, under the leadership of Dr. Manal Abdeen (then director of the center), hosted all the preparatory committee meetings and covered all hospitality expenses and document printing costs.
Approval of the Constitution and Transition to the Executive Body Ensuring inclusivity and fair national representation for all nutrition specialists in Sudan, without limiting the association to a specific institution, the preparatory committee called for the first expanded meeting of the preparatory office at the university headquarters. Representatives from various universities, hospitals, ministries, and organizations were present, led by Dr. Mayada Faisal and Professor Sadiqa Oshi (may God have mercy on her).
At this meeting, the association's bylaws were approved a few days before Professor Sadiqa Oshi's death, and the official
and legal procedures were followed through the Humanitarian Aid Commission, leading up to the first general assembly.
First Administrative Formation (Convening the General Assembly) With the convening of the first general assembly and the completion of procedures, the preparatory committee was dissolved, and Dr. Mayada Faisal voluntarily relinquished the presidency to establish the principle of leadership rotation and to give others the opportunity. To ensure fair representation for all parties in the executive office, the following was formed: Ms. Wafaa Mohamed Ahmed Al-Badawi | President of the Association (after Dr. Ikhlas Makawi's apology due to travel abroad).
Dr. Mayada Faisal | Head of the Training and Staff Development Office
Dr. Hanan Al-Amin, Omdurman Islamic University | Head of the Research Office.
In addition to assigning a select group of distinguished staff to other executive offices.
